6 questions we always ask: Ellen Baker, author

Before I blatantly steal the ‘about’ section from Ellen Baker’s website you should know that her latest novel I Gave My Heart to Know This got a pretty sweet rave in the StarTribune this weekend.

So here comes the ripoff portion: “Ellen Baker was born in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, and grew up in Wisconsin, Illinois, and South Dakota. She has worked as a costumed living history interpreter, a curator of a World War II museum, and as a bookseller and event coordinator at an independent bookstore. She lives in Minnesota.”

And now here comes some new information! Ellen will doing a book singing at the Duluth Barnes & Noble on Thursday, August 4 at 7 p.m.; she’ll be reading at Common Good Books at 8 p.m. Monday, August 8, and she’ll be reading with Sarah Stonich (who answered our 6 questions a bajillion years ago) at Magers & Quinn at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 9

Got all that? Now on to her answers.

What book(s) are you currently reading?
Blood and Thunder by Hampton Sides, Wild Life by Richard Ford;Shelter by Sarah Stonich; Trying to Save Piggy Sneed by John Irving; and Queen
By Right
by Anne Easter Smith.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who?
Um, well, this has been a secret up till now, but I did have a crush on Charles Main from John Jakes’s North and South trilogy when I was twelve. A rakish cavalryman. Sigh.

If your favorite author came to Minnesota, who would it be and what bar would you take him/her to?
I can’t pick just one. But I think it would be fun to take all the authors I just listed above to a bar in Walker. I don’t know why Walker; it just seems right. We’d have spent the day out fishing, and would probably play darts.

What was your first favorite book?
The Poky Little Puppy.

Let’s say Fahrenheit 451 comes to life, which book would you become in order to save it from annihilation?
The Poky Little Puppy. Although it would lose a lot without the illustrations.

What is one book you haven’t read but want to read before you die?
Again, it’s impossible to pick just one. I have a long list, and, in my mind’s eye, shelves and shelves full.
