Events of Note May 17 – 22

If you’re the type of lit lover who likes going to see authors read, you’re in for quite a treat this week. Yann Martel, Tim O’Brien, Brady Udall, this week is crazy with authors visting our Twin Cities. Here’s a few you may want to check out.

Yann Martel, Monday, 7:30 p.m. at Magers & Quinn. Martel, author of Life of Pi, which won the Man Booker Prize in 2002, was published in 44 countries, and became an international bestseller, with 3 million copies in print in the U.S. alone will read from his controversial new novel Beatrice and Virgil. This event is free.

Krista Tippett, Tuesday, 7 p.m. at the Central Library. The host of NPR’s Speaking of Faith will be speaking in Pohlad Hall in the Central Library about her latest book, Einstein’s God (Ben’s review). This event is free.

Brady Udall, Wednesday, 7 p.m. at Micawber’s. Udall will read from his newest book, The Lonely Polygamist, a family epic featuring Golden Richards–an intense and unreal/real protagonist. (Casey’s review). This event is free.

Monica Ali, Wednesday, 7 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Theater. The 10th anniversary season of Talking Volumes continues when Kerri Miller welcomes author Monica Ali to talk about her latest novel In the Kitchen. Tickets are $20.

Susan Orlean, Thursday, 8 p.m. at the Fitzgerald Theater. With phone guest Billy Collins, musical guest: Haley Bonar, and special guest: John C. Reilly. Susan Orlean has written for Rolling Stone and the Village Voice. She’s been played by Meryl Streep in the film, “Adaptation,” which was based on her book, The Orchid Thief. Susan is a staff writer for The New Yorker and author of The Bullfighter Checks Her Make-Up and Lazy Little Loafers. Tickets are $27.50

Tim O’Brien, Friday, 7 p.m. at the Chaska Community Center. Not gonna lie, this one makes me so excited I nearly lose bladder control. O’Brien’s the author The Things They Carried which is probably the only fiction about the Vietnam war you ever need to read. This event is free.

Kurtis Scaletta & John Coy, Saturday, 11 a.m. at The Loft. The Loft's reading series for writers of young adult and children's literature, curated by Swati Avasthi and Heather Bouwman features a baseball-themed reading with Kurtis Scaletta and John Coy. This event is free.
