My First Review: Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam by Cynthia Kadohata

cracker

I picked Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam because it is a Maud Hart Lovelace Nominee for 2009. I was a little worried at first to begin reading this book because I was scared it would have a lot of guns, war, blood and dying. It turned to have not a lot of that at all!

Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam is a story about an amazing dog named well, Cracker. She started out with her old 11-year-old owner named Willie, whose father lost his jobs so, now he has to live in an apartment. That means he had to give Cracker up to the U.S. Army because the landlord says he can’t keep her anymore. After that Cracker was given to her handler Rick.

Rick is a boy from a small town in Wisconsin who saved a little boy's life. He thought he would make a good dog handler in the army. Rick and Cracker struggled at first, but made their way to the top of the class. While in Vietnam they went on a secret mission and saved both their and others’ lives. Also, they made new friends while on the job. Cracker and Rick got so close when they were training, but it got to be a struggle when they were in Vietnam.

My favorite part in this book was when Rick was thinking about a time when Cracker started drooling when she saw a chicken. When I read it, I just laughed out loud. I even had to show my brother, Max it! I also, really liked that part when Cracker was saying the places they were going in her own way like Benwa instead of Bein Hoa. 🙂

Overall, I just loved the book! The only thing I would change about the book is that I wanted Cynthia Kadohata to add more parts when Cracker is thinking on her own. There are just a few little paragraphs where Cracker is thinking by herself about things that are going around her. My rating for this book would be 4 ? or 5 out of 5 stars!
