6 questions we alway ask — Kelly

kelly

Kelly is a writer and a high school English teacher who is on her way to becoming a funeral director (I know!). Her short stories are quiet, controlled and very, very twisted (she once wrote about a woman who add cremains to a hotdish). Someday someone will be smart enough to publish one of them and you’ll see what I mean. She blogs at I am Who I am and Death Becomes Her.

What book(s) are you currently reading?
Right now I’m reading Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. I used to read 3-4 books at the same time, but lately I’ve been finding I need to focus on one in order to actually finish it.

Have you ever had a crush on a fictional character? Who?
I crush on fictional characters a lot I think it goes back to my “imaginary friend” days of being an only child. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s James Gatz (the “Great Gatsby”) is the first that comes to mind, along with Edward from Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” series. Typically I go for a tragic, chivalrous, superhuman type of man. Kind of like real life.

If your favorite author came to Minnesota, who would it be and what bar would you take him/her to?
If Stephen King came to Minnesota, after I picked myself up off of the floor and reassembled myself into a solid, I would bring him to Stella’s Fish Cafe in Minneapolis. Good food (though he’d probably scorn our “fresh” lobster) and a great view of the skyline. King is, of course, familiar with the Twin Cities, so he may have his own ideas on where he’d like to go!

What was your first favorite book?
The Very Hungry Caterpillar. I loved it. Made my mom read it until she went insane. My first favorite adult novel was American Appetites by Joyce Carol Oates. I read it in college and it was the first book that I was really compelled to read and obsessed about finishing. It was a nice change from all of my other textbook reading.

Let’s say Fahrenheit 451 comes to life, which book would you become in order to save it from annihilation?
Easy: The Great Gatsby. Hell, I might become it now anyway just for fun.

What is one book you haven’t read but want to before you die?
Can I say my own? Ha. I keep trying to read Crime and Punishment but something always comes up instead.
